The State Broadcasters - s/t (ep)
Another dweller of The Wendy House, The State Broadcasters more than pay their digs with their brand of melancholy and wistful take on Americana and folk. Their self titled ep rolls into life with ‘Archaeological Dig’ which spirals upwards delightfully with the vocals cooing and aahing from the off.
Throughout the record, although the pace never steps up too much, the sense of warmth and comfort, coupled with a mix of honest yet covert lyrics adds to the impression of a band relaxed with their own talent.
‘My Binoculars’ comes close to jaunty but in a pleasant way, Graeme Blacks weary but pleading vocals weave easily over a tinkling background which may suggest Teenage Fanclub on a midnight beach in L.A. but that can only be a good thing.
Closer ‘Takeshi’ drops the tempo to a minimum but wraps the package off rather nicely. A joy to behold.
